History
Mayfair has a long history and is a much-loved part of the Strettons. Once it was open fields, the site of the sheep sales and a traditional May fair. The Centre was originally built in the 1970's as a residential home. Following the closure of the home in 1995 members of the community came together and with the backing of South Shropshire Housing Association, the present owners of the building, the Mayfair Community Centre was created. The Centre is 'run by the community for the community' through the Strettons Mayfair Trust, a local charity and company limited by guarantee.
The Centre was opened in 1997 and in 2002 a major building programme funded by the National Lottery's Healthy Living Centre programme added a second floor. The Centre continues to grow and develop to provide care, support and information to people of all ages in the area. Services have been developed in response to local need either as a result of requests from the local community or needs identified by statutory agencies.
Mayfair has been recognised as an example of good practice at a local and national level, the most notable being a cross governance report issued by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister entitled 'A sure start to later life; Ending inequalities for older people. (2006)'
Much of the vision for Mayfair came from Meg Bacon. We were all delighted that her hard work for the community was acknowledged by the award of an MBE in 2007.
