Today is an extra special day for Mayfair – it’s our birthday! Today we are 24 years young.
Twenty-four years ago, The Strettons Mayfair Trust was set up when the community persuaded South Shropshire Housing Association to repurpose the site of a former care home, Mayfair House. Funds were secured, plans were drawn up and volunteers recruited. This campaign was led by Mayfair’s founder, Meg Bacon, whose experience as a nurse working in the community, led her to see how local people could benefit from a centre offering friendship and activities, supporting them to remain well and independent.
When Mayfair Community Centre opened in 1997, it offered day care with bath and laundry facilities, a café, arts and crafts and range of complimentary therapies. Over the years we have continued to grow in response to local need. Today we have two centre buildings, the Mayfair Centre and the Health and Wellbeing Centre, 36 members of staff and the support of more than 200 active volunteers. We have developed many services for the local community, including Ring & Ride, the Mayfair Meals programme, and the CoCo befriending scheme. We have a creche, rooms for hire to local community groups and work closely with the NHS to give local access to health services. Several services we have piloted have been extended countywide and we have won a national prize for our impact on health.
‘It has been a great privilege to set up Mayfair and I am eternally grateful to local people for their support and encouragement. It has been a joy to watch it grow and continue to serve the community.’ – Meg Bacon MBE, Founder and Trustee.
Over the past year, Mayfair has faced new challenges, with the doors closing to the public and vital services continuing through lockdown. Now, as we’re starting to see our way clear of the pandemic, with the doors opening to the public, in-person activities resuming, and fundraising events making it back on the calendar, we’re ready to celebrate!
On Monday 21 June, we are stringing up the bunting and hosting a celebratory birthday tea at three o’clock in the Mayfair Centre’s dining rooms. There will be tea or coffee and a slice of birthday cake for £2, with full table service, on-table entertainments and a raffle.
To continue our celebrations through the week, we will be offering a special price of £2 for tea or coffee and cake all week in the Coffee Shop in Mayfair’s Health and Wellbeing Centre.
From Wednesday 23 June, the Coffee Shop will be extending it openings hours, to 9.30–12.30, opening on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.
Pre-booking is advised but if space is available, we will try to accommodate any walk-ins. Those interesting in making a booking should phone Mayfair reception on 01694 722077.
